With Public Allies, you can make a career out of making a difference.


Public Allies New York Recruitment season for the Ally of 2013-2014 has begun! They are looking for diverse people who are at least 17 years of age, and who have at least a high school diploma or GED and are committed to creating social change.


Minimum requirements to be a Public Ally are:

  • U.S. citizenship or legal permanent resident status
  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

You must be passionate about social issues, interested in working with a diverse group of people, and ardent about developing your full leadership potential. They are looking for potential Allies that are self-directed, energetic, creative, and resourceful.

Public Allies is a full-time commitment which frequently requires more than 40 hours per week. Allies are discouraged from enrolling in school or working other jobs during the apprenticeship period.

Stipends ($$) and benefits

Public Allies New York program provides a stipend of $1,700 per month.  In addition, Allies receive health insurance, child care, interest-free student loan deferment and a post-service education award that can be used to pay of past student loans or future education (currently $5,550).

hat You Get


If you are selected to be an Ally, you are placed with a local nonprofit organization and participate in a full-time, paid apprenticeship for 10 months. You’ll work at a nonprofit organization and attend regular skill-building and leadership development sessions with your cohort of Allies.  You will use your new leadership skills to help make an organization better and connect to the leaders and organizations in your community to help address real issues.

Application process and timeline
The selection process has two steps:

  1. Complete the on-line application http://apply.publicallies.org/ 
  2. Your application will be reviewed by a committee that consists of Public Allies New York staff, alumni, board members, community partners and you may be invited to participate in up to two interviews. All selected applicants will be notified the week of April 29, 2013
  3. If you are selected as a finalist, you will be interviewed with one or more nonprofit organizations, after which we will make final placements based on the feedback of the finalists and organizations.
  4. Application Deadline: April 17, 2013
  5. Public Allies New York program is set to begin on September 3, 2013
